Donor Egg Q & A

What is a donor egg?

A donor egg is an egg donated by a woman to intended parents, looking to get pregnant or use a gestational carrier. The donated egg is fertilized by a partner’s sperm or donor sperm.  A surrogate may also be used, and carry a donor egg for another individual or couple.

Once the donor eggs are fertilized, they are grown to become embryos.  An embryo is then transferred to the uterus where it implants and develops into a fetus.  This requires the process of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

When is egg donation used?

Egg donation can be the treatment of choice for many couples for a number of reasons.

  • Female advanced age
  • Fertility loss because of chemotherapy or medical issues
  • Unknown reasons for infertility
  • Multiple miscarriages
  • Prevention of an unwanted genetic condition in the conceiving mother
  • LGBTQIA+ couples or single men wanting to conceive via surrogacy
  • Lesbian couples wanting to use a donor egg for the other parent’s uterus

You can work with your physician to develop an egg donation plan that best meets your desires for a successful pregnancy. All egg donors are screened extensively before proceeding with the treatment.

How does egg donation work?

The women donating eggs are normally in their 20s, they undergo the process of ovarian stimulation for IVF and have their eggs removed. The donor injects herself with ovulation stimulation medications to produce multiple usable eggs during one menstrual cycle.

Your OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® physician then does a minimally invasive procedure to “harvest” the eggs. Preimplantation genetic testing diagnosis (PGTD) is an option for donor eggs as well.is an option before IVF, where an embryo is tested for specific genetic conditions.

Once the embryos are created, the uterus of the intended parent or gestational carrier is prepared for implantation over the course of a few weeks.  She continues to take hormonal medication through the first trimester, during a period of time in which your OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® provider will monitor the pregnancy carefully.

There are benefits to using donor eggs and can be a great option for couples seeking to build out their family when biological options are not available and are looking at ways besides adoption.

Donor egg plans can often be successful, and your OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® physician works with you to determine the best donor and strategy for becoming pregnant.
