What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination (AI) is the introduction of sperm into a woman’s uterus, other than through sexual intercourse, with the desire to achieve pregnancy.

OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® offers a type of AI called intrauterine insemination (IUI), a procedure that places sperm inside a woman’s uterus during her time of ovulation.

During sex, sperm has to travel through the vagina and cervix before reaching the uterus and then fallopian tubes. During IUI, your physician is able to place sperm directly in the uterus to help increase the chances of egg fertilization.

When is intrauterine insemination used?

Your physician may encourage IUI as a fertility treatment for many reasons, some of which are:

Issues during sex (painful intercourse, erection, or ejaculatory issues)
Male infertility
Unexplained infertility or subfertility (delay in conceiving)
Cervical problems
Donor sperm for single or LGBTQIA+parents

During the process, you collaborate with your physician on how to collect the sperm for use or utilize donor sperm options.

How can I prepare for artificial insemination?

Your physician may encourage combining artificial insemination with medications that help a woman produce more eggs during ovulation, which helps increase the chance of pregnancy. Insemination can also take place during a cycle with no added medication.

An ultrasound is used to assess a woman’s number of eggs, and determine which dosage of medication, if any, is needed.

Occasionally, many eggs are grown as a result of the medications, increasing the chance of multiples but your physician works with you to minimize the risks and to make sure everything is safe before proceeding.

Artificial insemination or IUI usually occurs around ovulation. Your doctor may use an injection that triggers ovulation.

What happens on the day of the IUI procedure?

On the day of the IUI, the OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® lab preps the sperm sample you’re using in order to accumulate the most motile sperm within a fluid that’s gentle on the uterus.

For the female patient, the procedure occurs at the office, and is similar to a pap smear. A flexible tube (catheter) is used and is gently passed through the cervix, and the sperm is inserted into her uterus.

After the procedure, the patient can lie back and rest for a moment, and may or may not experience light cramping or spotting. She can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure.
