OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix®

Fertility Clinic located in Newport Beach, CA

If you’re unable to carry a baby to term, but still may conceive a biological child, gestational surrogacy can be the answer. In gestational surrogacy, an embryo is formed via in vitro fertilization using your egg and sperm from your partner but carried in the womb of a surrogate. At OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® in Newport Beach, California, Sharon Moayeri, MD, and Nidhee Sachdev, MD, provide this service to women struggling to get pregnant. Gestational Surrogacy Q & A

What is gestational surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy is the process in which a woman carries and delivers a child for another couple or person. The process involves In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the uterus of the gestational carrier.

How is an embryo created for gestational surrogacy?

The doctors at OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® use in vitro fertilization or IVF to help the intended parents create an embryo.  The embryos can be created using the eggs and sperm from the intended parents or using a combination of donor egg and donor sperm.

The resulting embryos that are created, are transferred to the gestational carrier in the same way that embryo transfers are performed on patients undergoing IVF and carrying the pregnancy themselves.

Who is a candidate for gestational surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy can help a person or couple who otherwise could not have a child. Cases in which gestational surrogacy may be an option include:

  • Prospective parent doesn’t have a uterus
  • Intended mother has a medical condition that makes pregnancy and delivery dangerous
  • Mother chooses not to be pregnant
  • History of uterine issues that result in recurrent miscarriage

Gestational surrogacy is an important option in same-sex, male couples, or for a man without a female partner.

How is a surrogate chosen?

In some cases, you may have a friend or family member to serve as the surrogate. The team at OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® helps you carefully evaluate the potential surrogate to determine if they are an appropriate candidate.  Additionally, the OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® team will help you navigate the medical, legal, and financial aspects involved in using a gestational surrogate as it can be an involved process.

OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® has relationships with excellent surrogate agencies in the area and can make recommendations to help find a gestational surrogate. Any gestational surrogate should undergo a comprehensive health history and physical exam as well as hormonal and infectious disease testing.

OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® also recommends that gestational surrogates and their partner – if appropriate – meet with a mental health professional specializing in third party reproduction to ensure that the person carrying your baby understands the psychological and social issues that may emerge from becoming a gestational surrogate.

If you’re looking for options to have a child even when pregnancy doesn’t seem to be an option, contact OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix® to learn more about gestational surrogacy. Call today or book an appointment online.
