Sperm Donation

What Is Sperm Donation?

Sperm donation is a procedure where a man donates semen to help an individual or a couple conceive.

When Is It Used?

Sperm donation may be required in cases where there is no male partner available such as with a single parent by choice or an LGBT couple. Sperm donation may also be advisable in cases where a male partner’s sperm may not be usable due to loss of fertility or the desire to not pass on a hereditary condition.

What Do I Need to Know

Donated sperm is injected into a woman’s uterus using intrauterine insemination (IUI) or used to fertilize mature eggs in a lab through in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Before donating sperm, donors are screened for medical conditions, common genetic mutations (i.e., cystic fibrosis), sexually transmitted diseases, and other risk factors.

If you are seeking a sperm donor, we can refer you to donor agencies and provide you with assistance in selecting the donor that is best for you.
