Genetic Screening at OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix®
What is Genetic Screening?
Genetic screening is an important part of the fertility journey. At OC Fertility® + OC Biogenix®, we offer comprehensive genetic testing at key stages of treatment to improve outcomes and reduce risks.
Our team uses the latest technology and testing methods to support your family-building goals and help identify any potential inherited or chromosomal conditions early on.
When Is Genetic Screening Performed?
Genetic screening can occur at three different stages of the fertility process:
1. Before Treatment Begins
- Expanded Carrier Screening (ECS) identifies whether you or your partner carry genes for inherited conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, or spinal muscular atrophy. This screening helps prevent passing on serious genetic disorders.
- Karyotype Chromosome Testing may be recommended if you or your partner have a history of infertility, miscarriages, or known chromosomal issues. It checks for structural abnormalities in chromosomes.
2. During In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
- Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) involves biopsying a few cells from the embryo 5–7 days after fertilization (blastocyst stage). This test helps determine if the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes or inherited gene mutations.
Types of PGT:
- PGT-A (for aneuploidy): Screens embryos for abnormal chromosome numbers to improve chances of implantation and reduce miscarriage risk.
- PGT-M (for monogenic disorders): Used when one or both partners are carriers of a specific genetic disorder.
- PGT-SR (for structural rearrangements): Used when a parent has a known chromosomal translocation or inversion.
3. During Early Pregnancy
- Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is offered in the first trimester. This simple blood test screens for common chromosomal abnormalities (like trisomy 21, or Down syndrome) and can also reveal fetal sex.
Why Is Genetic Screening Important?
Genetic screening helps:
- Identify potential risks to a pregnancy early on
- Prevent transfer of embryos with severe chromosomal or genetic abnormalities
- Improve IVF success rates and reduce miscarriage risk
- Provide peace of mind for prospective parents
As maternal age increases, the risk of chromosomal issues—such as missing or extra chromosomes—increases, which can lead to infertility, miscarriage, or syndromes like Down syndrome or Turner syndrome.
Is Genetic Testing Right for You?
You may benefit from genetic screening if you:
- Are over the age of 35
- Have a family history of genetic conditions
- Have experienced multiple miscarriages or failed IVF cycles
- Want to reduce the risk of inherited conditions in your future children
- Are interested in gender selection (in applicable cases)
