What is Amniocentesis? Amniocentesis is a procedure in which a small sample of fluid surrounding a developing fetus is removed in order to test the pregnancy for certain medical problems including: abnormal chromosome number (i.e., aneuploidy, such as Down’s Syndrome), specific gene disorders (i.e., cystic fibrosis), or infections.
